With pay as you go cell phones, you'll only pay for the minutes that you actually use. If you don't talk on your phone a lot, then you will definitely save more money.

You also have to sign a contract whenever you get phone service from major wireless cell phone carriers. These contracts force you to stay with the company for a specific period of time, normally around two years. If you want to leave before then, you will need to pay an early termination fee.

This isn't a problem with prepaid plans, as they are no contract cell phone service plans. You can shut off the service or switch cell phone companies whenever you feel like it without having to pay a fee. This is definitely the cheaper option.
