Why am I writing this? Well, I've searched high and low on the internet and in stores for the best and cheapest cell phone plans available. In my most recent round of research to buy a new cell phone for myself, I found well-meaning reports that were unfortunately out-dated with prices that was true for 2008 and earlier but are no longer so. I thought I'd write something up so people can get accurate information from a fellow shopper and stop wasting money on expensive cell phone plans while still getting the reliable coverage they need.

I'm going to warn you because I'll be covering both pros and cons, so if it's something you might not want to hear, then you might as well leave now.

So here it goes.

The cheapest cell phone plans available today are prepaid cell phone plans. With a prepaid plan, you pay for a certain period upfront, say 3 months or 1 year. Before that service period ends, you add service time and minutes to your phone. If you prefer, you can also sign up on recurring monthly plan. That way, a fixed number of minutes is added to your account each month and service is maintained until you cancel it. There are no contracts or cancellation penalties.

While prepaid cell phone plans are certainly the cheapest cell phone plans available today, there is no one single plan that is best for everyone. You have to reflect on your own needs and pick what suits you best.

If having cellular service is just for emergency use and a few occasional calls, then the $10 a month TracFone cell phone plan is probably all you need. If you are used to paying $50 a month for your cellular service, that's saving $40 a month or $480 a year!

The $10 a month plan gives you 50 minutes of talk time a month (or 100 minutes a month with Double Minutes for life benefit). They include a prepaid family plan option that allows you to purchase additional phone lines at $6 each.

TracFone $10 Monthly Plan highlights

Monthly talk time: 50 minutes or 100 minutes with Double Minutes benefit (see next paragraph for explanation).

Double Minutes for Life benefit: A benefit that immediately doubles all minutes bought. The benefit costs $25 if you buy a Double Minutes for Life benefit card separately. However, it is bundled Free with a number of starter packages on their website. So unless you rarely use your cell phone, it best to buy a new cell phone with the unlimited Double Minutes included (Tracfone website) right from the get-go.

Cheap Family plan option: Additional phones lines start at $6 a month. 60 minutes included each month with Double Minutes benefit, 30 minutes without.

Cheaper TracFone pay as you go plans: Pay $20 for 3 months of service. It works out to a minimum of $6.67 for 40 minutes a month if you have the Double Minutes for life benefit. Higher denominations available with more minutes included. Minutes still work the same for all features like texting, roaming, international calling and rollover.

Need more minutes? If you need extra talk minutes or text messages: For either the monthly billed or "pay as you go" option, you can always purchase additional airtime as and when you need them. Additional minutes cost as little as 10 cents each with the Double Minutes benefit.

Long Distance: You pay the same as a local call - that's the best long distance rate.

Roaming: No surcharge, pay the same as a local call (important if you travel and make calls from non-local areas)

International: No surcharge, pay the same as a local call. This is important if you have friends, family or business overseas. Always a good back-up option to have, international calls are expensive on most landlines. TracFone is the cheapest cell phone plan for making international calls.

Minutes and Airtime rollover?: Yes, Any minutes or days of service you add to your TracFone carry over and are added to the minutes and days of service you already have.
